Public speaking strikes fear into the hearts of many a grown man and woman.

But public speaking need not be so fearful. If you give me just 5 minutes to read the article below, you'll discover how you too can learn the basics of how to prepare and give a speech, and put yourself well on the way to becoming a polished public speaker.

Identify your audience – who is your target audience? Who are your attempting to deliver your message to? Is it teachers? Drug addicts? Can you identify with your audience, and even more importantly, can they identify with you?

One sure-fire way of keeping your audience attentive and interested is by using humor throughout your speech. Your ultimate goal as a speaker is to get your message across in an effective manner – but does that mean you need to turn into a comedian just so the audience hears you?

The word “props” actually derives from an old theatrical term – “property.” In public speaking terms it means any object or item that the speaker uses to help get their message across to the audience. That could mean anything from a podium to a laser pointer, a flipchart to a PowerPoint projector, handouts to a DVD player. Virtually anything can be used as a prop.

Good public speakers follow many of the same procedures and protocols when giving a speech; the basics are the same, just the delivery and style change with the individual speaker. Here are a few common tips that will help you succeed as a public speaker.

Some speakers find it easy to use props to help keep them on track with what they want to say during their presentation. For example, I know one man who wears a different hat for each segment of his speech – he changes the hat and replaces it with another when he goes to the next segment. The hats remind him of key points to cover in each portion of his speech.

Come into the room with the attitude that you’re simply having a conversation with a roomful of friends - you’re going to tell them a story about … whatever your speech is about. If you’ve researched your topic, know your material and practiced what you’re going to say, you’ll find it easy to have this mindset.

Have you ever had the feeling when you get up in front of an audience to give a speech that you’re utterly and completely naked? Not in the real sense, of course, but in the sense that it’s just you, the microphone and the audience. You have no podium to hide behind – no slide projector or pointer – in other words, you have no props.

When practicing your presentation and polishing the material – keep an eye out for jokes or one-liners that you can use. Try to find material that integrates with your style – don’t try to steal someone else’s delivery. The audience will respond to you if you just be yourself.

Public speaking ranks right up there with public torture for most people - they’d rather die than get up in front of a room full of strangers and give a speech of some sort. That’s a pretty silly reaction, considering public speaking really isn’t all that difficult - but there you have it.

Identify an action plan – you need to explain to your audience – in precise detail – how your audience can succeed at what you’re inspiring them to do. They need a roadmap for success.

That doesn’t mean your presentation has to be a “laff-riot” – in fact, your subject matter may not be appropriate for large doses of humor. For example, if you’re addressing cancer survivors, you’d want to tone down the ratio of jokes and one-liners, but if you were speaking to a group of salespeople, you could be a little more free-wheeling. You’ll be the best judge of content, knowing your own message and audiences. Just don’t toss out the humor entirely.

Not at all. But consider this - if your audience isn’t listening – if you’re boring them, you’re not delivering your message in an effective manner. And if you’re not getting through to them – you’re wasting your time and your message is being lost. You don’t have to become a comedian to be a good, but you do have to know when to use humor to get your message across.

A little pre-planning and practice can go a long way toward alleviating that paralyzing fear of getting up in front of a crowd – the more knowledgeable you are about your subject, the more confident you’ll be in your presentation, and the more effective a speaker you’ll be. Keep in mind that almost all audiences – from the guests at a wedding to a political fundraiser – want you to do well, so the chances of tomatoes being tossed in your direction are slight.
